Meaningful Home Design 1: Whose House It Is
This amazing bungalow, with a size of 33,700 sq ft, belongs to Sheng Siong co-founder, Lim Hock Leng. The old building, which took up a small bit on a huge plot of land, caught his attention when he was looking for a home for his multi-generational family. He had visited over 20 houses but it was only this property and land that caught his eyes. He felt comfortable when he went up to the upper floor for a view. So, he decided to make this place his home with a creative meaningful home design.
Meaningful Home Design 2: Who Built It
Tay Yan Ling and Pan Yi Cheng, the principal architects from Ta.Le Architects and Type0 Architecture, respectively, were the meritorious workers behind this meaningful home design. This inspiring architecture was designed by these incredible designers who crafted a new extension to fit in with the old colonial bungalow.
Meaningful Home Design 3: The House's Concept
Lim was seeking a home for his multi-generational family, and the home design was about embracing nature and history. Lim often went to China and took the chance to visit many courtyard houses. He told his designers that he would love to build a modern courtyard house. And so, the designers were inspired by the Chinese courtyard house and created a meaningful home design that embraces family, heritage and nature.
When talking about the meaningful home design concept and idea, Tan said, “We wanted very much to preserve this green character of the site, so we transformed the new bungalow extension into a series of green terraces,” Designer Pan added, “The entire idea was for the new extension to disappear into the landscape. Rather than it being changed, it has been reinforced, especially with the interior design.”
Meaningful Home Design 4: Special Features of the House
Since the conserved colonial bungalow is almost a century old, the designers were asked by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to conserve this building. So, they used similar colours, textures, and materials to form the relationship between the old building and the new one in this meaningful home design. The designers worked to emulate the ‘heritage flavour’ of the older building to integrate it into its redesign, especially for the interior space. The red tones of the original red bricks were retained, antique finishings were added, and the grilles were designed to resemble fans to complement the original floral-patterned ones.
- The house has two courtyards punctuated by air wells.
One of these courtyards is the main family gathering area. The living and private areas are separated so that everyone has their privacy.
- The door handles at the foyer form the Chinese character “LIM” which represents their family name.
- To commemorate the family’s humble background in pig farming, an art relief that uses eight different shades and nearly 4,500 blocks of timber was added to the courtyard.
- This is a spiral staircase comprising 139 brass-plated strips.
The staircase at the water courtyard is one of the world’s largest functional art installations as it is composed of 139 brass-plated strips in sequence.
- Here is a marble feature wall with a symmetrical pattern of two hearts and a diamond.
“The stone on the wall creates a pattern which resembles a diamond. There are two hearts at the top and bottom which means love, and my wife likes the symbolism,” Lim said.
